Emden is a charming port town located in the northwestern region of Germany. With a population of approximately 50,000 residents, it is situated on the banks of the Ems River, making it an important commercial center for centuries. It serves as a primary port for the region. Notably, Emden played a crucial role in the development of the Dutch Revolt against Spain during the 16th century, consequently becoming a hub for textile trade between Europe and the Americas exporting mainly BMWs. The town is characterized by a unique blend of historical architecture and contemporary design due to is hard bombing it took at the end of the second World War. , explore the impressive Great Church, which was rebuilt in 1637 after suffering damage during the Dutch Revolt, and visit the many bunkers around the city. Emden is also home to numerous cultural institutions, including the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum, an impressive regional museum that covers approximately 7,000 years’ worth of history.

Die Flussschleuse

Locations | Free

Emden boasts an extensive network of waterways, making it a popular destination for boaters and sailors. Emden contains the largest water gate system in the world, called Die Flussschleuse. The historic harbor is full of life, with fishing boats, yachts, and larger vessels all found alongside each other in a colorful array. Additionally, the town is home to numerous parks and green spaces, including the delightful Parkhaus, which is located in the heart of the town and features a variety of recreational facilities. In the main square you can also find the Famous Dat Otto Huus, which is a very famous comedian, making children's characters, toys and much more. The city even has its crosswalk lights in the shape of his characters.

Continually, the surrounding cities are a must-visit for those staying in Emden for a week or so, which I highly recommend but you will need a car. These cities like Noorden, Greetsiel, and are more preserved as they were not as affected by the bombings so they still have the classic architectural style of the original area.

The Leaning Steeple of Suurhusen

Locations | Free

Greetsiel is worth a day trip to see the Leaning steeple. This little unknown gem is actually the most leaning, by degree building, to stand on its own, most would think that title would be held by the Tower of Pisa, but it is held by this church called The Leaning Steeple of Suurhusen. Noorden is especially interesting because they are a port city fishing famously for micro prawns, which they then ship to Morocco to be shelled, which is apparently cheaper. A restaurant called Noorman's Fischeria is a must go as they display the ports amazing fishing with delicious dishes.
