🇮🇹 Discovering Rome: An Insider's Guide to Top Activities, Dining Spots, and More

Updated: Jan 6

🏛️ Discover the Sites and History

Rome, the capital city of Italy, is a vibrant metropolis steeped in history and culture. Known as the "Eternal City," Rome boasts a rich heritage that spans over two and a half thousand years. It is famous for its ancient ruins, stunning architecture, and significant contributions to art and religion. Every inch of the city has something to offer. It was one of the most overwhelmingly interesting experiences I have had on my travels because of the layers and layers of history stacked on to of each other. One of the most interesting things I learned is that they couldn't build a lot of underground rail way systems because no matter how far down they went they kept running into new historical city sites. Mind blowing. My Visit here was full of amazing experiences. After three days we were completly exahusted.

Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill

The optimal way to experience these two sites is by using skip-the-line tickets or joining a guided tour, as the most intriguing aspects are the history and details about how, when, and why they were constructed. Although I'm not usually a fan of walking tours (because you can walk and have google), this one was definitely worth the three hours of walking and navigating through the crowd.

Vatican Museums & St. Peter’s Basilica

This is another challenging situation; ticketed tours are essentially the only way to gain entry. Remember that when visiting the Vatican, a valid passport is required since you are entering another country. St. Peter's Basilica houses the renowned Michelangelo's magnificent Pietà, among other incredible works of art and statues.

Explore Trastevere

A quirky bohemian neighborhood full of fun artisanal shops. Make sure you check out the Church of Santa Maria and Gianicolo Hill viewpoint while you are there

Pantheon

You can walk easily here and see its beauty without going inside. Goin inside is not crucial but they do charge a fee that you can either pay in cash when you get there or purchase online (book here)

Trevi Fountain

there are no tickets needed for this beautiful structure however it is important to go early morning or late at night to avoid crowds.

Check out: Capitoline Hill & Museums, Piazza Venezia and Vittoriano

Capitoline Hill is one of Rome’s seven ancient hills and has been the city’s center of government since Roman times. The Capitoline Museums, the world’s oldest public museums, house important ancient sculptures and artworks, including the famous Capitoline Wolf, offering deep insight into Rome’s classical past.

Piazza Venezia is a major crossroads in the city and connects ancient, medieval, and modern Rome. The Vittoriano (Altare della Patria) honors Italy’s first king and symbolizes national unity. Its massive white marble structure and terrace provide some of the best panoramic views of Rome.

Together, this area highlights Rome’s journey from ancient empire to modern nation, making it a meaningful and visually impressive stop.

🏛️ Adventures and Excursions

Tivoli (Villa d’Este & Hadrian’s Villa)

Two most famous UNESCO World Heritage sites; Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa

Just about 30 km east of Rome, the charming town of Tivoli has long been a favorite getaway for Romans because of its gentle climate, beautiful landscapes, and abundant water qualities that made it ideal for grand villas and gardens.

It wasn’t just a villa — it functioned almost like a miniature ancient city, with palaces, baths, temples, libraries, theaters, gardens, and water features spread across about 120 hectares.

Day trip to Amalfi

The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of southern Italy known for its dramatic cliffs, colorful seaside towns, and clear blue waters. Towns like Positano and Amalfi cling to the cliffs, offering beautiful views, historic charm, and great food.

You should take a day trip from Rome because it lets you experience one of Italy’s most famous and scenic regions in a short time—perfect for seeing breathtaking landscapes, coastal culture, and iconic photo spots without changing hotels.

It offers a rare and powerful look into ancient Roman life, preserved almost exactly as it was nearly 2,000 years ago when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Walking through its streets, homes, temples, and theaters feels like stepping back in time, making history easy to understand and unforgettable.
