Florence (Firenze) is one of the most historically significant cities in the world—a place where art, politics, philosophy, and food shaped modern Western culture. Walking through Florence feels like stepping into a living Renaissance painting, where every street, church, and piazza tells a story that spans over 2,000 years.
Founded by the Romans in 59 BC, Florence began as a military settlement before growing into a powerful medieval city-state . Its true golden age came during the Renaissance (14th–16th centuries), when Florence became the intellectual and artistic heart of Europe .
At the center of this transformation was the Medici family, wealthy bankers who ruled Florence for generations. Their patronage funded legendary artists and thinkers such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Galileo, and Dante—names that still define art and science today.
Before Rome, Florence was once even the capital of Italy 🇮🇹 (from 1865–1871), and its influence can still be felt in Italian language, art, and cuisine. Today, Florence blends its remarkable past with vibrant modern life, making it one of Europe’s most beloved destinations ❤️.
